PlayStation 5 Launch Guide: What Games Should You Play?

PlayStation 5 Launch header

In just under a week’s time, the PlayStation 5 will grace many living rooms, bringing some much-needed next-generation oomph in visuals and gameplay. Not only that, but Sony’s launch line-up is stacked with a number of both first and third-party games.
That said, some of you may be undecided as to what you should play on your shiny new console first. God of War? Days Gone? Well, those are good choices, but here are six games that you should pick up sooner rather than later, just so you can enjoy everything they have to offer – and perhaps even more.

Spider-Man: Miles Morales
Two years after producing the best Spider-Man game on the market to date, Insomniac Games has returned with Miles Morales, a chapter that focuses on a younger and equally powerful version of the hero. Master his combat and special moves as you take on a variety of adversaries from the Spidey universe, all with a story that unfolds beautifully.
Not only that, but if you snag the special edition of the game, you’ll also be able to enjoy Spider- Man Remastered with a number of visual enhancements and gameplay improvements. It’s up to you where to start your adventure, but we always say that two Spider-Men are better than one.

Sackboy: A Big Adventure
Although it may not be as in-depth or community-featured as the LittleBigPlanet games, Sumo Digital’s Sackboy: A Big Adventure should be a thrilling escapade for players of all ages. Take control of one of many different Sackboys (and Sackgirls!) as you attempt to stop an evil scientist from overtaking your land. With just the right amount of challenge, creative level designs and fully supported co-op, Sackboy’s antics just might win you over during the launch season. We know we’re on board for it.

Demon’s Souls
Following their work on the brilliant Shadow of the Colossus, Bluepoint Games is back for more, resurrecting the thrilling adventure Demon’s Souls for a new generation to enjoy. With frighteningly good visuals, awesome boss encounters and gameplay that will challenge you at every turn, this looks to be the dark horse of the PS5 launch line-up. And yet, we know many players that won’t wait to jump in and see what it has to offer. Just be prepared to die – a lot.
This is a Souls game, after all.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War
A system launch just wouldn’t be a system launch without a Call of Duty game, would it? And while Treyarch’s Black Ops IIII was a huge hit with players, it just felt like something was missing. Fortunately, Cold War looks to deliver in spades. With a single player story that ties in with previous Black Ops games, along with traditional multiplayer set to blow your doors off and a new Zombies experience ready to chill your spine, this could be the most loaded Call of Duty game to date. Not to mention that it’ll run at a gorgeous 120 frames per second on the right TV. Now that’s some tech we want to see.

Godfall
Gearbox may have been busy celebrating the success of its latest Borderlands game (which will also be compatible with PS5, complete with next-gen tweaks), but that isn’t stopping the publisher from trying new things with the innovative Godfall. Featuring some awesome character perks that you can evolve, along with captivating combat and visuals that literally pop off the screen like fireworks, this might just be one of the system’s biggest surprises at launch. And who knows, it could grow even more with content down the road, giving it infinite replay value!

Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate
Finally, who isn’t down for a fight during the launch of a new console? Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate brings an already packed cast to the system, along with two storylines and a whole lot of carnage. But on top of that, you also get three new characters joining the fray, including the return of Mileena and Rain, as well as the legendary soldier Rambo. Put him against Robocop and Terminator and watch the sparks fly. With enough sales, we could see NetherRealm bring an even bigger fighting game to the system down the road. Injustice 3, is that you?!
