Gearbox charges into the Next-Generation with Godfall on PS5

There’s a pretty impressive launch line-up for the PlayStation 5 right now, including a new Sackboy game, a new Spider-Man game, and Demon’s Souls’ impressive remake. But there’s also some third party thunder on the way, including Godfall, a new action/adventure from the publishers at Gearbox Software and the developers at Counterplay Games.
There’s a lot of meat involved with this game, as you’ll be able to fight with equal amounts of concentration and brute force, while using a variety of weapons that can get the job done. The real question is if you’re ready for what it has to offer.

Weapons and Strategy Are the Name of the Game

As you can see in the trailer above, Godfall isn’t a typical hack and slash game. Sure, you can use weapons to slice and dice your opponents, but it helps to actually exploit where their weak points are. As you can see, finding and attacking these points is no easy feat, but the Valorian knights you control can utilize their Valorplates to find said weak points.
This usually comes up right after they attack, in which you’re able to jump in. Sure, you can strike the rest of them, but there’s actually something rewarding when it comes to hitting the weak points. Not only do they go down faster, but you’ll also score some precious loot, which can help you with taking on enemies in a much easier manner.
The combat system utilizes both heavy and light attacks, each of which have their advantages.
Heavy attacks can chip away at an opponent’s armor, while light attacks can be chained together to deliver some quick damage. You can also mix the two up, if you feel like you need to take someone down very quickly.
It’s all built around something called Aetherium, which ties in with their spirit. As they chip away at their opponents, they see this dwindle down, and have to keep a close eye on their own. Land the strikes just right, and you’ll see this put to better use as your moves can literally destroy these enemies. These come with Soulshatter strikes, which can be quite rewarding depending on how well your attacks go. And that means more loot in the long run.

A Shock(wave) To the System, Along With Good Defense
But there’s more to the combat, thanks to Polarity Attacks. Once you charge up your weapon of choice with a well-timed strike, you’ll actually increase the damage your weapon delivers for 30
seconds. This is especially useful against tougher foes, particularly those that have more armor or a little more strength to them.
But this isn’t all about strikes. You’ll also need to use defensive moves with your shield in order to avoid succumbing to attacks. These include everything from a simple stomach punch to a powerful shield ground slam that can throw someone off. There are different techniques to discover and utilize, so be sure to practice up and mix these defensive moves with your strikes, which should make you a more effective combatant in the field. Again, they’re really useful, especially when you have an opponent that’s much tougher than you.
What’s more, there’s also Archon mode. Once you fill up your archon bar in the midst of combat, you can click on both analog sticks and unlock this temporary mode. As you do this, you’ll have buffs with triggers alongside them, which can really bump up your destructive power. Get this going and even the toughest enemy won’t be able to stand in your way.

Different Weapons for the Job
What’s more, Godfall doesn’t just rely on one simple weapon. There are various ones available, each with their own special advantages in combat.
For instance, the Warhammers deliver a heaping amount of strikes, though it takes a bit longer to execute them due to their massive size. Still, once they land, hoo boy, there’s barely anything that’ll barely stand in your way.
Next up are Polearms. These serve as lighter weapons with a great deal of range, which means you can use them on opponents that are a little further out. They can also knock an enemy back pretty well, though they’re not nearly as damaging as the Warhammers.
The Greatswords are excellent, with an ideal amount of strength behind them and a little bit of better precision. Plus they tie in with a Charge bar that allows you to deliver well-timed strikes for even greater damage.
And this is just the beginning, as there will likely be even more weapons to unlock as time goes on, including the Longsword and Dual Blades, which you can see briefly in the trailer below.
That’s where Godfall is looking to deliver, and well, we might add.

A Next Gen Visual Experience

Along with in-depth gameplay, Godfall also looks to deliver a gorgeous-looking next-gen experience. You can get a good look at what’s cooking above, with gorgeous 60 frames per second visuals, beautiful effects and animation that really comes together. It’s not entirely final just yet, but you get a good idea of what’s in store.
And the sound looks to keep right up with the visuals, with a cinematic score that plays alongside what you’re doing, along with sound effects that really immerse you within the universe. Get the right headset and you’ll really be drawn into the realms of Earth, Water, Air and Fire. (No, it’s not Captain Planet, calm down.)

You’ll Rise Up For Godfall
Gearbox is no stranger to releasing immersive experiences for each generation of gaming. Ask anyone that’s delved into their Borderlands games. So Godfall should fit right in to this experience, delivering top-notch, unpredictable combat and wildly original visuals that bring each extraordinary world to life. We’ll see how the game measures up when it arrives on November 12 for PlayStation 5, with a release later for Xbox Series X.
