Ubisoft Connect recap: Far Cry 6, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla and other surprises

Although today’s Ubisoft Connect wasn’t exactly chock full of surprises, it did give us a look at some of the major titles that the company is hard at work on – including the next intriguing chapter in the Far Cry series.

Kicking things off, the publisher got back into Watch Dogs Legion, which is set to arrive on October 29. In the game, you’re a member of a resistance in London, working to not only take down a security force named Albion (run by the ruthless Nigel Cass), but also a criminal syndicate that’s taking advantage of the system in the worst ways possible. Throughout the
game, you’ll be able to control a number of citizens, each with their own special abilities that come in handy. One is a construction worker that knows how to create his own level of mayhem between vehicular control and utilizing a nail gun; while another can hack drones however she sees fit, including a spider-like one that can crawl on opponents and shock them silly. You can even control an Albion soldier as she sneaks into a compound to dig up the dirt on Cass.
So far, the game looks to be the deepest Watch Dogs game to date. And considering you can pretty much recruit whoever you want – even old ladies! – Legion should give you no shortage of people to play with. We’ll see how it fares later this year. You can check out the trailer below!

Next up is Hyper Scape, Ubisoft’s attempt to join the free-to-play Battle Royale market. In it, players dive into a futuristic virtual landscape, attempting to secure a win against 99 other digital opponents. But there’s something deeper at play here, a sinister secret that a few users are hoping to find more information on. You can learn more about its background below.

At this point, Hyper Scape doesn’t have a release date for consoles, though it is expected sometime later this year. There is, however, an open beta happening now on PC. You can catch a sneak peek below, and register to take part in the action on the official web page.

Ubisoft then dove into Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, which will release for both current-gen consoles as well as PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X on November 17. In it, you take control of a Viking, either male or female, as they leave Norway due to politics and the need to find additional resources. Your next stop is Britain, and, well, let’s just say that everyone isn’t exactly excited to see you.

The 30-minute gameplay above shows a deep dive into what Valhalla is all about, and also reveals some improvements to the overall aspects of the Creed series. These include improvements to the combat, with the introduction of a harpoon and throwing axes; as well as stun attacks that can leave an opponent wide open for damage. And the finishers? Absolutely brutal. What’s more, you can dual wield weapons however you see fit. You can even use two shields at once if you’re the defensive type. Check out a hint of this in the trailer below, and prepare for battle on the 17th.

Last but not least, Ubisoft finally confirmed Far Cry 6 with a pair of cinematic trailers. Though there was no gameplay revealed from the title, we do know two things – its setting and its release date.

The cinematic trailer above shows a town in turmoil, ruled with an iron fist by Anton Castillo, played by actor Giancarlo Esposito. He brings a great deal of heft to the role, as he guides his young son Diego to ruling the city – even if it’s in the midst of a revolution. You’ll actually portray a member of said revolution, fighting back against Castillo’s forces. You can learn more about what Esposito does with the role in the trailer below.

In the main cinematic trailer for Far Cry 6, included below, we get a look at Castillo as he gives his son a live grenade, explaining its parts and how it relates to his current rule of his city. And then, at the end, he dares him to drop it on his opponents. We’ll be getting a look at Far Cry 6’s first gameplay in the months ahead. In the meantime, you can prepare for the game when it arrives on current and next-gen platforms on February 18, 2021.

Outside of that, Ubisoft didn’t have too many breaking announcements, no Scott Pilgrim, sadly; and no word on the future of Rainbow Six Siege. However, Ghost Recon Breakpoint will get a new Resistance event for all players to enjoy, as well as the return of AI soldiers to help out single players. You can learn more about these in the trailers below.

And finally, The Crew 2 continues to get new content going into its third year, with a Summer In Hollywood event that introduces iconic cars from films, like the DeLorean from Back To the Future; along with a series of new racing events. You’ll be able to buckle up for these in just a few short weeks.

Ubisoft promised another Connect later this year, which will hopefully provide us Far Cry 6 gameplay, as well as updates on Skull & Bones and Beyond Good and Evil 2. We’ll see what drops in the months ahead!
