As promised, Sony revealed a first look at the PlayStation 5 console today, along with a number of key titles that will come from its own PlayStation Studios, as well as other publishers. And the presentations did not disappoint.
From Horizon II: Forbidden West to Gran Turismo 7 to Village: Resident Evil 8, there was something for everyone during the event. There were also some small surprises that caught us off guard, like first gameplay from Bethesda’s Ghostwire Tokyo and Deathloop, as well as an all new Sackboy and Astrobot games – oh, and the return of Ratchet and Clank!
Let’s recap some of the best announcements from the event below, complete with trailers!
Horizon II: Forbidden West
As expected, Guerrilla Games showed off the first trailer for its long-awaited trailer to Horizon: Zero Dawn. In Forbidden West, Aloy once again returns, this time taking on formidable new adversaries, including a group that apparently has large mechanical menaces on its side. Guerrilla looks to be going all out with the PS5 hardware here, as this could be a potential launch title for the sequel.
Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart
While Insomniac Games is hard at work on the next Spider-Man adventure (which we’ll get to momentarily), it hasn’t forgotten about Ratchet and Clank. The duo will return in Rift Apart, in which they travel through interdimensions attempting to save the galaxy. But this time around, a female Lombax appears to be entering the scene…
Gran Turismo 7
Begone, Gran Turismo Sport – the true champion is about to hit the race track. Polyphony Digital is hard at work on Gran Turismo 7, and even offered a look under the hood with first gameplay. It definitely has realism nailed down pat, but the real thrill will come from what the game will do with the PlaySense controller. We’re revved up for this one.
Astro’s Playroom
AstroBot makes his return for the first time since his initial PSVR adventure, but this time in a bold new PlayStation 5 platform that all gamers can enjoy. Astro’s Playroom looks like a blast, with gameplay that takes advantage of the controller, along with fun visuals.
Sackboy: A Big Adventure
Although it’s not your typical LittleBigPlanet journey, Sackboy: A Big Adventure looks to be a joyous spinoff. Featuring full co-op support and lots of fun costumes to change into, Sumo Digital’s secondary adventure should keep fans of the long-running series pretty pleased.
Spider-Man: Miles Morales
Sooooo… that Spider-Man sequel we were talking about? Well, this time around, Miles Morales is taking center stage. Set to debut later this year, Spider-Man: Miles Morales lets the younger hero take the reigns this time around, as he faces unspeakable dangers within the city.
Village: Resident Evil VIII
Set to debut next year, Resident Evil VIII isn’t your typical entry in the horror series. It focuses on what appears to be Victorian times, but with a modern twist, as werewolves lurk and dangerous enemies threaten your existence. But don’t worry – Chris Redfield is around to clean house.
Hitman III
It’s time to kill yet again with IO Interactive’s stealth/action series, Hitman. Only, this time around, the targets are way more elusive (including one hiding out in a gigantic air fortress); and Agent 47 doesn’t appear to be the only pro in play. We’ll see how this pans out when it arrives sometime next year.
Grand Theft Auto V
Considering that it’s sold over 100 million copies to date, why wouldn’t the Grand Theft Auto V experience come to a new platform? With the PS5 version, things will be expanded and enhanced more than ever before. Plus, you’re getting cash rewards each month in the PS4 game until the new version arrives in 2021. So…enjoy that life of crime!
Destruction Allstars
No, we’re not getting that Blur remaster like we badly wanted. However, we are getting something new from Lucid, the developers behind that game – a hybrid of Rocket League and Twisted Metal, with some on-foot antics thrown in as well. Destruction Allstars looks to be the vehicular madness we’ve been waiting to grasp for some time.
Demon’s Souls
Bluepoint Games, the masterminds that made Shadow of the Colossus such a gem on the PS4, have returned with yet another stunning remaster. Demon’s Souls will make its return to the PlayStation 5, with more challenges and harrowing visuals than you can shake a sword at. Good luck surviving this one.
Ghostwire: Tokyo
There have been some turbulent talks over this Bethesda project since its initial announcement. But based on this new gameplay trailer, Ghostwire: Tokyo looks like a heck of a lot of fun. Not to mention all the ways you can off enemies in first-person viewpoint.
Deathloop
And speaking of ridiculous looking efforts from Bethesda, the team behind Dishonored is back with Deathloop, a wild and enriched battle between two assassins as they try to stay alive while the same continuous time loop plays over and over again. It’s like Groundhog Day, but with bullets. And bloodshed. Also, no groundhogs.
NBA 2K21
Although there isn’t any gameplay footage to speak of just yet, we have to admit, Zion looks pretty good when it comes to his NBA 2K21 player model. The basketball sim will officially make its next-gen debut when the game comes out later this fall. And rock that rim!
And the rest…
A number of other games were also revealed during the PS5 event, including the following:
– Oddworld Soulstorm – the latest Abe adventure from Oddworld Inhabitants
– Project Athia – a bold new adventure from Square Enix and Luminous, set in the third person perspective with a new female hero
– Stray – a unique adventure from Annapurna featuring a feline and a bunch of robots
– Returnal – Housemarque’s return, which looks like a cross between Anthem and Nex Machina, with some Edge of Tomorrow thrown in
– Kena: Bridge of Spirits – a thrilling platforming adventure from the team at Ember Lab
– Goodbye Volcano High – a beautifully animated story from Ko_Op
– Jett: The Far Shore – the latest from the team at Superbrothers
– Godfall – a thrilling action game with customizable armor, now being published by Gearbox
– Solar Ash – a gorgeous third-person action/adventure from the creators of Hyper Light Drifter
– Little Devil Inside – a quirky little hunting/action game focusing on two different characters
– Bugsnax – think Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2, but with the weirdness of the Octodad developers thrown in
– Pragmata – an interesting looking title revolving around an astronaut and a little girl trapped on the moon
And, as you can see above, Sony also revealed a first look at PS5 hardware, complete with both a disc and digital-only model, as well as other key features. There’s no word on price or release date yet, but we should know more soon in the months ahead!
