The PlayStation 5 reveal is literally just hours away, with a number of new games set to be revealed. We probably won’t see too many big blockbusters, but Sony should have some surprises in store.
And by that, we’re hoping the return of some long-lost franchises. Sony has taken good care of some of them, like The Last of Us, obviously. But there are others that have been left by the wayside, leaving some wondering if they’ll come back at all.
Obviously, Marvel’s Spider-Man and Horizon: Zero Dawn are safe bets, but what about the others? We’ve listed some of the series below that are overdue for a comeback. And the PS5 seems just as good a stage as any.
Sly Cooper
It’s hard to believe that it’s been seven years since we’ve seen Sly and his gang of fellow thieves in action. The last time they emerged was in Sanzaru Games’ brilliant Sly Cooper: Thieves In Time, which followed Sucker Punch’s previous trilogy of adventures without missing a beat. Now, with the PlayStation 5 sneaking up on gamers, it seems as good a time as any for Sly to
break his way back into the line-up. And while Sucker Punch may be busy with Ghost of Tsushima, it doesn’t look like Sanzaru has anything on its plate at the moment. So, yeah, guys, give us back our Sly! (Or at least a thrilling side adventure starring Murray. We miss Murray.)

MotorStorm
Can you believe it’s been nearly a decade since we’ve seen an entry in the MotorStorm franchise? Obviously, part of that reason stems from the closure of Evolution Studios. But there has to be a way for Sony to find a good development studio to hit the road again with this wonderful racing series. The thrill of racing off-road (or, like the last entry, through an apocalypse) can’t be beat; and it’d be great to see how a racing game feels with the PlaySense controller. C’mon, Sony, we need to hit the road again with this one.

Jak and Daxter
Naughty Dog’s been so busy working on Uncharted and The Last of Us games that it almost made us completely forget about one of its earlier hit franchises – Jak and Daxter. But now that the team has said that it’s got nothing on its plate aside from the big blockbuster sequel dropping later this month, maybe it’s time to dive back into this fantasy world. Jak and Daxter have a camaraderie that can’t be beat; and the platforming action is still timeless, as those that purchased the re-released games for PlayStation 4 will attest. It’s time for this duo to make their long-awaited return.

Ape Escape
While not as big a hit as other Sony games that came out over the years, Ape Escape received a strong cult-like following from the original PlayStation days. But it’s been quite a while since we’ve seen them monkeying around in a new adventure. The time has come upon us for them to return. That’s right, we’re asking for a planet of the Apes.
A new Ape Escape with co-op elements, new puzzles, and a variety of different ape types would hit the spot, especially for those looking to get into PS5 gaming for the first time. We need our damn dirty Apes!

Killzone
We did get Killzone: Shadowfall with the PlayStation 4 launch, and, honestly, it’s not too bad. But it didn’t even come close to the lofty heights of the amazing Killzone 3, which remains one of the greatest PS3 games out there. We know that Guerrilla Games is busy working on its sequel to Horizon: Zero Dawn; but it wouldn’t hurt for them to consider a return to form with this series, with a wide-open first-person shooter along the lines of what Killzone 3 delivered. And utilizing the amazing PS5 tech, we know the team can get the job done. It’s just a matter of waiting and seeing what they do with the Horizon games first, then marking a return to its first- person shooter roots. We can wait…but only for a while.

Resistance
Insomniac Games already has its hands full with the Marvel’s Spider-Man sequel; and, for all we know, Ratchet & Clank and Sunset Overdrive (yes, we’re still hoping) are in the pipeline as well.
But, somewhere down the line, it would be wonderful for the studio to look back into its thrilling World War II-alternate franchise, Resistance. The developer set the bar for the series with the original Fall of Man back in 2007, following it up with two highly effective sequels and wrapping up the saga in style. But there’s always room for a new tale; and the PlayStation 5 seems like effective hardware to introduce it to us.

Parappa the Rapper
“U rappin’ good!” It’s been ages since we’ve seen Parappa on the scene, whipping out his funky lyrics and impressing friends and enemies alike. And while the remaster was nice to see, we’ve been long overdue for a third adventure featuring this hero and his funky, funky friends. Utilizing the PlaySense controller, Parappa 3 could easily win us over with amazing new songs, a fun visual style akin to the first two games, and maybe even a little multiplayer to get us into a rap contest like nobody’s business. C’mon, Sony, we gotta believe that this needs to happen.

PlayStation All Stars Battle Royale
Is it on the same level as Super Smash Bros. Ultimate? Not really, no. But there’s still something special about PlayStation All Stars Battle Royale, where you can make LittleBigPlanet’s Sackboy pummel the ever-loving crap out of Kratos and Big Daddy. It’s a magical fighting game that’s easy to pick up and play, but tough to master. And we’ve been long overdue for a sequel, one featuring new characters like Aloy from Horizon: Zero Dawn and others of that type. Not to mention better networking features, more fighting modes, improved gameplay and that luscious PS5 polish. This is more needed than you might expect.

Jumping Flash!
A lot of you may have missed the Jumping Flash games back in the original PlayStation era. But they’re classics, as you control a heroic robot rabbit, utilizing a number of weapons to overcome a zealous bureaucrat and his army of ne’er-do-wells. The first two games were a blast, but we are shocked that Sony hasn’t revisited the franchise since. A return is obviously long overdue, with fantastic new world designs that would leave us breathless, along with new gameplay features and, dare we say it, PSVR compatibility? It’s time for Robbit to rule the world yet again.

Twisted Metal
It’s absolutely shocking that Sony hasn’t done more with the Twisted Metal franchise over the years. It helped define the PlayStation era with three great opening games, then really went over the top with the awesome Twisted Metal Black on PS2. And while we got a re-release of Black on PS4, more is needed. And what better way to bring it back than on the PS5. We’re talking more opponents – including the return of Sweet Tooth – along with multiplayer features galore, more car-nage (see what we did there?), and more awesome gameplay techniques to master. This would be a series welcomed back with open (if somewhat bruised) arms.
