This past week’s PlayStation 5 announcements lived up to the hype, with everything from Spider-Man: Miles Morales to a new Ratchet and Clank to the long-awaited sequel to Horizon: Zero Dawn being announced. But something that came about that players weren’t really expecting was the arrival of Grand Theft Auto V, which is set to arrive in the second half of 2021 for the system. And what’s more, it’ll be “expanded and enhanced,” though Rockstar didn’t detail what that was just yet.
While some players groaned at the idea, it makes sense. Around the time of its release, Rockstar will also offer Grand Theft Auto Online separately, free of charge, to open up its audience. Its new technical features should make it the best version yet, despite the first- person mode that was added to the PS4 and Xbox One versions. But the real question is…why? Well, when you take a closer look, there are three key reasons that stand out when it comes to bringing the best-seller to the platform.
Expanded and Enhanced
With Grand Theft Auto V on PlayStation 5, Rockstar Games has a golden opportunity to make the game the pure technical beast that it can be. That means bumping up its frame rate to 60 frames per second, even in the most intense of firefights; and making the detail look even more life-like than ever before, like the main characters featured in the game. What’s more, loading times would be a thing of the past, as you can jump around the city with relative ease, without missing a beat. Not to mention Grand Theft Auto Online, Rockstar could not only improve the performance of online play with the game, but it could also add Crossplay support with the PlayStation 4, as well as potential other platforms. Making it that wide open, with Xbox One/Xbox Series X and PC owners onboard, which could make it bigger than ever. So, yeah, a port makes sense – especially when you consider the next thing…
We Won’t See Grand Theft Auto 6 For a While
Although there have been talks about the next Grand Theft Auto being in the works, Rockstar hasn’t confirmed anything. And it likely won’t for at least a few years, as long as the success of Grand Theft Auto V continues – which it surely will. So, to appease its fans – and perhaps hold them over until Red Dead Redemption II possibly arrives – a port of GTA V just makes sense.
And with the platform’s raytracing and high-end power, it could easily make it pump out quality visuals and gameplay so that it seems like a new experience, although we’ve obviously covered this ground before. People pay for enhanced ports all the time. And GTA V is a prime example of that, and if you need further proof…
120 Million Plus Gamers Can’t Be Wrong
During the last official tally earlier this year, Rockstar Games confirmed that Grand Theft Auto V has sold over 120 million copies. That number is still climbing, considering that the number has grown exponentially since its release on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. It’s insane how much people get into this game, even though it released wayyyyy back in last generation, as somewhat of a farewell on Xbox One and PlayStation 3.
Those numbers could easily continue to climb on PlayStation 5. People already know what a great game GTA V is; and with this new version, they would have the best one available. And
for those that don’t entirely want to hop on board with a full purchase, there’s always Grand Theft Auto Online to consider, which will be available within the first three months of release at no charge. You know, for players that don’t necessarily want to pay $60. (Though, obviously, there will be many that don’t mind; and that number could easily shoot to 150 million once GTA6 eventually makes the rounds.)
So What Can Players Expect From GTA V on PS5?
That’s the real question. Again, Rockstar Games only said that the game would be “expanded and enhanced”. That’s not to say we’ll see a new story add-on, as the company already said it’s pretty much wrapped up. However, there is the possibility of new missions to keep players interested, along with potential daily challenges. And let’s not forget the technical upgrade that the game would receive, possibly bumping up to 60 frames per second, with spectacular ray-tracing and minimal loading times – if any. There’s also GTA Online. Rockstar has supported this mode incredibly over the last few years, with weekly events, new add-ons like its online casino, and plenty of sale items to customize your character with. That’s not going to change anytime soon, since it’s still making Rockstar all kinds of mad cash. It will add on even further on PS5.
Let’s look at the potentially biggest feature of all – Crossplay. It’s been incorporated into different games lately; and GTA Online would be huge once Rockstar gets it working. The second half of 2021 gives them a lot of time to test out features and make sure everything clicks; and by that point, the game will still have a ton of players. Add in the ability to take on their friends, no matter what the platform, and it’ll skyrocket even further. We’ll have to wait a bit to see GTA V in action, probably around sometime in the beginning of 2021. It’s debut will certainly make sense; and it’s bound to become an even bigger seller than ever before. There’s no stopping this life of crime.
