Just a mere day after Ubisoft confirmed that it won’t take part in the event, several other companies have also noted they won’t be at this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) either – leaving its future in question.
A new report from IGN revealed that Sega and Tencent will not be taking part in the event, joining the likes of Ubisoft, Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo in preferring to do their own thing.
For good measure, Devolver Digital has also confirmed that it’s out, though it hasn’t really been to a show yet anyway.
These are the latest blows to the event, which was initially set for a big comeback this June. The ESA had signed on ReedPop, the company behind the Penny Arcade Expo (PAX) events, to help promote and put it together. However, with all these companies dropping out – along with others like EA and Activision who abandoned it anyway – it’s hard to tell if there will be anything left to see.
Sega and Tencent haven’t provided their reasoning for not attending, but it’s likely aligned with what Ubisoft was going to do. Rather than attend the show (like initially promised), Ubisoft instead opted to hold a Ubisoft Forward event on June 12th in Los Angeles. It’s very likely that EA will return with EA Play around the same time period, and Microsoft could do something Xbox- related next door at the Microsoft Theater.
There’s no word yet from ReedPop or the ESA on the future of the event. But, for right now, it just doesn’t look good.
