We’re not sure what’s harder to believe – the fact that Microsoft was mostly dormant with new releases in 2022; or the fact it’s already off and running in the new year with one of the best games on the market.
It’s a bit shocking, considering Hi-Fi Rush came out of nowhere. What’s more, it came from Tango Gameworks, a studio usually known for more serious fare like The Evil Within and Ghostwire Tokyo. But, man, they pack a wallop with this vibrant, rhythm-based platformer. It’s boldly original, fun to play and packed with the kind of presentation that simply makes the screen pop.
You’d be crazy to be without it – unless you’re not really crazy about rhythm games. That said, you’d be missing quite the party.
We’ll Take Some Chai, Thanks
The game focuses on Chai, a young kid with a robot arm and a heart that practically beats along to music. One day, he falls out with the corporate company he works with, and decides to start bashing robots and working his way to greatness within his bustling town.
While the story is a bit on the light side, no matter – it sets the stage for some terrific fight and platform sequences that are set to music. You don’t necessarily have to be perfect on the lighter settings, but the more you learn from the gameplay, the more you’ll excel. Tango Gameworks has done a slam-bang job with the gameplay. It’s easy to get into and tough to master, but always lively with its beat-em-up action and unique movement throughout the city. What’s more, you can always learn something new; and even the platforming sections benefit here and there from the rhythm. Some are a bit mundane, but not enough to throw you off from the action.
Overall, you’ve never really played a music/rhythm game like that. And you’ll be more than thankful for it.
What a Gorgeous Game
Along with gameplay that’s long-lasting and worthy of mastering, Hi-Fi Rush also comes with the kind of presentation that wows you at every turn.
First up is some smooth animation, taking a lesson from Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse with its hand drawn quality. It’s also taken some inspiration from Jet Set Radio as well, with its futuristic nouveau look and creative, bouncy characters. Even the bosses are a good deal of fun.
And what’s more, the game looks just as good in indoor environments as it does outside. You’ll want to see as much of this world as you can.
Backing everything up is a joyous mixture of familiar and new rock tunes that are worthy of playing along with, compiled with great voicework (the robots are a hoot) and splendid sound effects. In short, it all comes together in an unbelievable package for both Xbox and PC. No matter where you’re playing, you’ll have a great time.
What a Rush Indeed
Wow, and wow again. We’re not even midway through February and we already have one of the game of the year contenders for 2023 with Hi-Fi Rush. Everything just absolutely clicks about it, from the enchanting gameplay to the thrilling presentation. You’ll want to come back for seconds as well, if only to get a better rhythmic run going.
We don’t know the next time we’ll be able to dive into this world, but fingers crossed that it’ll be soon. Sequel please.
The Bottom Line:
How frickin’ great is Hi-Fi Rush? It’s packed with surprises and will keep you groovin’ well into the night.
Need a new console to play Hi-Fi Rush on? We’re giving one away!
