They just don’t make games like Space Harrier anymore. But Thunder Kid: Hunt for the Robot Emperor does have some similarities to it. It’s a 3D adventure that’s got some platforming to it, but has the same “behind the character” camera perspective throughout that follows our hero through a dangerous lair, where the robot emperor no doubt awaits. Along the way, good ol’ Thunder Kid has to contend with a number of robot forces, as well as some dangerous bosses.
Is it good enough to check out? Well, for $8, it’s not too shabby, but just don’t expect an experience jam-packed with depth.
Shoot, Shoot, Shoot Some More
The big thing about Thunder Kid is that it delivers arcade shooting in spades. You’ll make your way through room after room, dodging traps and clearing the area of all enemies before moving on.
Eventually, you’ll get to these boss battles, where they pack some serious firepower. In fact, these fights are probably the best thing about Thunder Kid, packing a good dose of imagination. That said, the gameplay does get repetitive. This definitely seems to be focused on arcade-style roots, so…don’t go expecting something along the lines of Doom. Instead, consider it a romp through a trouble-filled world, and very little else. But, again, for the bargain price, that’s not entirely a bad thing.
A Decent Looker For the Price
Though Thunder Kid won’t rock you on the same level as other memorable arcade shooters, it’s not a bad looking game. The levels look all right, and the 3D effects are pretty cool. That said, the enemy design could’ve used a punch in the arm, as only the bosses really stand out over the whole ordeal. Otherwise, it’s “face type A,” “move on to type B,” and so on.
As for the music, it fails to really rise to anything memorable. But it does serve as decent background noise for when you’re going through this trap-filled lair. Just don’t expect an amazing soundtrack.
This Thunder’s Okay, But Could’ve Used More Rumble
For the price, you get a pretty good adventure out of Thunder Kid. It doesn’t have the most memorable presentation, but it’s not bad in terms of appearance. And it has fun shoot-em-up gameplay that will keep you busy for a little while, though clearly it lacks long-term gameplay.
That said, considering its low price and its shooting thrills, it’s suitable for a blind bargain buy. (That is, unless you don’t own Space Harrier yet.)
The Bottom Line:
Thunder Kid: Hunt For the Robot Emperor isn’t the best shooter out there, but given its discount price, it’s far from the worst either. Definitely worth checking out if you’re a fan.
