Though it was only rumored for a while there, we’re happy to report that Kratos will soon be invading television screens!
Amazon has confirmed that it has ordered a live-screen adaptation of the hit game series God of War, which will be as an episodic series. Rafe Judkins, who previously produced the Wheel of Time series for the company, will serve as showrunner. There’s no word what storyline the God of War series will follow. However, considering the popularity of the 2018 game and the just-released sequel Ragnarök, it wouldn’t surprise us if it took that chosen path.
Iron Man and Children of Men scribes Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby will serve as writers for the series, as well as executive producers. PlayStation Productions’ Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan, Santa Monica Studio’s Yumi Yang and Vertigo’s Roy Lee will also be part of the team. Amazon Studios is working alongside both Sony Picture Television and PlayStation Productions on the series.
“God of War is a compelling, character-driven franchise that we believe will captivate our global customers as much with its expansive and immersive worlds as its rich storytelling,” Vernon Sanders, head of global television at Amazon Studios, said. “We are honored to share in the adventure of exploring the God of War mythology in such a momentous way with Sony Pictures Television, PlayStation Productions, and Santa Monica Studio.”
There’s no word on a release date yet, or who would possibly play Kratos. But it’ll be interesting to see who turns up.
Meanwhile, Sony has other hot projects coming in. The Last of Us is set to premiere on HBO on January 15th; a Twisted Metal series starring Anthony Mackie is set to come to Peacock fairly soon; and there’s also a Gran Turismo movie in the works.
We’ll have to see where this series goes, but given Amazon’s track record, they’re in good hands, boy.
