Nearly six years on, the Nintendo Switch has become the company’s most popular system, combining the thrill of handheld gaming with some of the best console enjoyment. It’s sold over 114 million units, and still intends to go strong into 2023 with new Kirby and Legend of Zelda games on the way.
But if you’re new to Switch and need to understand what absolute bangers you need to own, never fear. We’ve got a list of five (okay, six) definitive titles that you should add to your library without hesitation. Whether you like racing, action or adventure, we’ve got all your needs covered. Let’s go!
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
Some may call this a cheat since the original Mario Kart 8 came out on Wii U a few years ago. But Deluxe is a port done right, with cool online options, a bevy of new content (courtesy of the new Booster Course Pass) and some of the best visuals you’ll see on Switch. Plus it feels right at home with various control options, and it looks great for on-the-go play. Seriously, if you even remotely like racing games, you can’t be without this legendary favorite.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
With the sequel finally coming our way next May, there’s no better time to rediscover the legendary Breath of the Wild than right now. It’s a massive, sprawling adventure with all sorts of exciting battles to partake in, along with breathtaking visuals and a quest that will introduce many great surprises. Really, Tears of the Kingdom has its work cut out for it – but if anyone can top the mighty Breath, it’s team Zelda.
Super Mario Odyssey
Five years later, and Odyssey remains one of the greatest Super Mario adventures in existence. It’s a globe-trotting adventure filled with innovative level design, along with fun hat-throwing gameplay and lots of cool secrets to uncover. Not to mention the bonus outfits to find, the new abilities to “steal,” the wonderful visuals and the catchy soundtrack. No wonder it remains a best-selling favorite to this day. Odyssey? Yes-see!
Supergiant Games already knows how to make a mean adventure game, with previous titles like Bastion and Transistor. However, with Hades, it absolutely hits its prime. You’ll take part in a thrilling underworld adventure, one that involves all sorts of gods and monsters. Take on heated battles with a variety of weapons, discover secrets, or simply take a moment to soak in the wondrous hand-drawn visuals. This game is something special – by the gods!
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
The cast may be complete for this one, but…wow. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is just loaded with content. Along with oodles of options for online battles with your friends, Smash also features a stunning single player World of Light mode, along with all sorts of bonus goodies. All of this is backed by an unmatched soundtrack that pays total fan service, and delightful visuals that bring each world to life. Dig in and prepare to Smash!
Dead Cells – Bonus Game
Last but certainly not least, we would be absolute fools not to include Motion Twin’s absolutely staggering Metroidvania style adventure, where you portray an undead warrior unleashing hell on his adversaries. This one’s got amazing visuals and stylish gameplay, complete with all sorts of different weapons to play around with. And the developer has added a ton of cool optional DLC packs as well, including the ability to play as legendary characters from other games. It’s the sort of game that won’t stay dead – just like its hero!
