We’ve already recommended some of the scariest video games that we have ever laid our hands on. But what about games for those younger ones that might not be ready for that just yet?
Well, not to worry! There are some great games out there that are perfect for all ages, and a must for those evenings when you’re done trick-or-treating and just want to have a ghostly good time with something.
So grab a drink and a controller and let’s enjoy these delightful little treats!
Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed
Unlike their previous Friday the 13th and Predator games, Illfonic’s Ghostbusters multiplayer game is something all ages can enjoy. You either play as one of the iconic heroes or a mischievous ghost trying to scare the daylights out of them. The game offers terrific online multiplayer options, but you can also play with bots if you just want to enjoy the game with your kids. Soak it in and then enjoy the original 1984 Ghostbusters movie while you’re at it.
We’re not afraid of no ghost!
Luigi’s Mansion 3
What’s the best way to battle ghosts, but without going overboard like a lot of mature-rated games do? Call on Luigi! Nintendo brought back the Luigi’s Mansion series with a well-deserved sequel for Nintendo Switch a little while back, and it’s still a hoot. As Luigi, you’ll venture through a very spirited home, taking on adversaries and helping out Mario and company so
they can enjoy their dream vacation. This one was so enjoyable, we definitely wouldn’t mind a part four.
Zombies Ate My Neighbors!
For a while there, ZAMN was pretty darn hard to find, thanks to the rarity of the SNES and Sega Genesis games. But thanks to a re-release, everyone can check it out for a much more affordable price. This is a joyous two-player romp where you rescue innocent people from all sorts of terrors, using a variety of weapons. The stages mix up nicely, and the visuals and sound hit the nostalgic spot. Just watch out for those killer dolls – their laugh is still incredibly haunting. (And hilarious.)
Haunted Halloween ’86: The Curse of Possum Hollow
While there are a number of great retro-themed games on the market these days, very few tend to eschew that spirit of Halloween. But, thankfully, Haunted Halloween 86 scratches that itch with ease. This Megacat Studios release features two heroes as they take on all sorts of dangerous creatures, through an old-school 8-bit style design that will take you back to the good ol’ days of the NES. What’s more, it’ll do so for the very affordable price of $10, so you still have money left over for some candy!
Costume Quest 2
Finally, if you’re going to celebrate Halloween the right way, you need to do it with a proper Halloween-themed game. The original Costume Quest definitely got the job done, but Costume Quest 2 expands the adventure even further with additional options, stronger visuals and enjoyable strategic gameplay. It’s a big hit for all ages, and a fun game to play with your kids.
But watch out for Candy Corn – he’s just useless.
