If you were expecting a Tomb Raider film sequel with Alicia Vikander once again suiting up as Lara Croft…sorry, but her raiding days are over.
The Wrap recently reported that the film rights for the franchise are no longer in the hands of MGM. The company was reportedly working on a sequel, but plans apparently fizzled out, and now new studios are jumping in to bid on the series.
As a result, it’ll likely go through another reboot, with another star in the lead role. Vikander starred in the 2018 reboot, which did modestly well at the box office, despite lukewarm reviews. Before that, Paramount Pictures had Angelina Jolie playing the character across two films, before losing the rights.
There’s no word yet on who will pick up the rights. However, Netflix is currently working on an anime adaptation of the character, so we’ll see where that leads. Crystal Dynamics is hard at work on the next game in the series, though details are sketchy at this point.
Enjoy the 2018 trailer below, and hopefully wish that the next chapter will get the character more on point.
