Ubisoft has seen better days. Amidst struggles with games and the recent delays of both the Avatar and Assassin’s Creed games, the company has now cancelled four high-end projects because of an “uncertain economic environment,” according to reports.
During its latest earnings call, the company confirmed the canning of these games. Among them was Ghost Recon Frontline, the free-to-play tactical action game that would’ve served as the next chapter after Ghost Recon Breakpoint.
In addition, Ubisoft Red Storm Entertainment’s latest project, Splinter Cell VR, was also cancelled, though reasons haven’t been given. Alas, that means Sam Fisher won’t enter this generation of gaming. At least, not yet.
The other two games were unannounced projects that weren’t detailed.
The company has noted that it’s working hard to create “efficient working conditions to ensure both flexibility for our teams as well as strong productivity.” It also hopes to keep pushing forward in the free-to-play market, though it didn’t announce any new projects.
Ubisoft is expected to host a special showcase on September 10th, though it’s unknown what it will unveil. We could get a better look at the oft-delayed Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake, as well as Skull & Bones, which will finally debut on platforms later this year. And we’re sure the new Mario & Rabbids game will stick its head out as well. We’ll see.
