A big surprise that came from this weekend’s Xbox Showcase revolved around Blizzard’s oft-delayed Overwatch 2. Despite the fact that the sequel is still very much in the works, it won’t be long before players can get their hands on it.
The company confirmed that the game will officially launch with “early access” on PC and consoles (namely PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series systems) on October 4th. What’s more, it’ll officially be free-to-play!
“We can’t wait to roll out the beginning of the Overwatch 2 experience on October 4 and introduce an exciting new competitive vision, featuring amazing new content and a reimagining of the iconic heroes, maps, and gameplay that made the original game so compelling,” Mike Ybarra, president of Blizzard, noted during the presentation. “This is the beginning of an always-on and always-evolving era for the franchise, and a recommitment to serving players with frequent and substantial updates planned well into the future to keep Overwatch 2 fresh and fun for many years to come.”
As an Early Access release, players can try out certain features from the game as Blizzard continues to tweak it. Furthermore, they’ll be able to check out the latest Hero introduced, the Junker Queen, who looks to raise all sorts of chaos as she goes along within the game. She’s “a high-mobility and railgun-wielding former Overwatch captain with cybernetic capabilities,” according to the company.
Blizzard is set to host a special “reveal event” on June 16th at 1 PM EDT, so we’ll have more details for you then. Check out the special new trailer below!
