We already know this year is a big one for Sonic the Hedgehog, between the success of his big-screen Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and the forthcoming Sonic Frontiers and Sonic Origins. But a new rumor suggests that Sonic Team has one more classic title waiting in the wings for fans.
An insider by the name of “Zippo” hints that the developers at Sonic Team are hard at work on a brand new 2D entry in the series, one that features a fully playable cast of Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles. The game will feature “no outside involvement,” which means it’s being made entirely in-house.
This would mark the first “new” entry in the series to go 2D since Sonic Mania came out a few years ago, and could follow along the lines of the previously released Sonic Advance games. There’s been no official word from Sega or Sonic Team about the game, so take it with a grain of salt. Still, with Sonic Mania literally running wild, it wouldn’t hurt to have a brand new game that takes the series back to the old-school right alongside Origins. We’ll see what comes our way in the months ahead.
In the meantime, Origins is set to debut next month, with Sonic Frontiers reportedly debuting
later this year.
