Sony has revealed the latest sales numbers for the PlayStation 5, and while it continues to perform reasonably well despite its limited availability, it didn’t quite meet the company’s expectations.
Thus far, system sales have topped 19.5 million worldwide as of March 31. That falls short of Sony’s estimate of 22 million, but that’s partly due to the supply and demand issue surrounding the system.
That said, Sony remained optimistic, as it’s looking to up production of the system by any means necessary, with another 18 million units estimated to sell through the remainder of the year.
Meanwhile, in that same quarter, the PlayStation 4 has only sold 100,000 units, indicating that it could finally be on its way out of market. That said, it definitely left its mark, with 117 million systems sold over the course of its life.
Sony also reported that it has 47.4 million PlayStation Plus subscribers, which is about a 200,000 player drop from the 47.6 million the year prior. But the company remains hopeful that many more will come on board once its enhanced PlayStation Plus program launches in various markets over the next few weeks.
We’ll see how the next year goes, but Sony does have some pretty big things lined up, with God of War: Ragnarök leading the charge and other potential exclusives to come.
