Square Enix was trying like crazy to appease Marvel fans with its dual projects from internal developers – the ambitious (but flawed) Marvel’s Avengers and the single-player opus Guardians of the Galaxy. While they were mostly well received by fans, the company reportedly took quite a bath getting the games out.
Industry analyst David Gibson noted that the primary reason the company opted to sell its internal studios is because that it lost a reported $200 million on the Marvel games, within a two year span. Despite the best efforts of the studios, the projects didn’t live up to the company’s lofty expectations.
Gibson did note, however, that he’s still shocked that Square Enix dumped the studios to Embracer Group earlier this week for the rock-bottom price of $300 million, along with their respective franchises. Reports indicated that the company was going to focus more on outsourcing projects to third parties, as well as potential blockchain projects.
Regardless, here’s hoping that Crystal Dynamics, Eidos Montreal and Square Enix Montreal can move on and actually do what they want to do under Embracer. Fingers crossed.
