Square Enix is a hard publisher to figure out. It expressed disappointment with certain franchises, despite the best efforts by the studios that made them. Perhaps that makes Square the problem then – and now the studios will actually get a chance to shine under a different publisher.
Today, it was announced that Square Enix has sold three of its top studios to Embracer Studios – Crystal Dynamics, Eidos Montreal and Square Eidos Montreal, the last two which will likely be renamed. As part of the $300 million deal (yeah, only $300 million), “over 50 games” will be
included, such as Tomb Raider, Deux Ex and Thief. There’s no word if Marvel properties will be part of the deal, but it doesn’t look likely.
That said, Western operations for Square Enix studios will continue with franchises like Outriders, Just Cause and Life Is Strange, though the future of said franchises is still up in the air.
That continues Embracer Studios’ push to keep up with the “bigger players” in the gaming market – Sony and Microsoft. Previously, Embracer had picked up a number of studios, including THQNordic, Deep Silver and its many developers.
Tomb Raider had done remarkably well for Square, selling over 85 million copies in all worldwide. Likewise, despite disappointment in the game’s launch performance, Guardians of the Galaxy did really well following its release as well, though Square probably underestimated what its team was capable of. Here’s hoping Embracer, erm, embraces what they can do much better.
