Looking forward to Sonic Origins in June? Well, you can actually play some of the classic Sonic the Hedgehog games right now – but you better get them while you still can.
Sega has announced that it will remove Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic 3 and Knuckles and Sonic CD from digital storefronts to prepare for Origins’ release. The last day you’ll be able to purchase and download these games is on May 20th.
That said, not all versions are going the way of the dodo. Sonic and Sonic 2 from the Sega Ages collection will still be available for download, and Sonic 2 will remain playable through Nintendo Switch Online, via the Sega Genesis app.
We’ve seen this kind of move before, as Rockstar Games temporarily removed its classic Grand Theft Auto games to prepare for its re-release of its remastered trilogy late last year, before putting them back after those games got a less-than-faithful reception. Sega’s move, however, will likely remain intact.
The good news is that if you purchase the games before they leave, they will remain in your collection, regardless of whether you get Sonic Origins or not. So that’s good news. But you might want to check out Sonic CD while you can, as it’s a pretty damn good remaster.
Sonic Origins releases for all consoles and PC on June 23rd.
