Following the success of Kingdom Hearts III and its spin-off chapters, we suspected that Square Enix would take it easy on the Disney crossover franchise for a while. Alas, we were wrong.
During a special showcase yesterday, the company revealed that a fourth chapter of the Kingdom Hearts saga is in the works. And despite the fact that platforms weren’t revealed just yet, Kingdom Hearts 4 looks very much to be a next-gen title.
In the trailer, we see the return of Sora, who teams up with a new character named Strelitzia, as he wakes up in a world called the Quadratum. Unexpectedly, it looks a lot like actual Tokyo. And within it, there’s a large Darkness warrior, who Sora wastes no time getting into battle with.
There is a brief hint of gameplay featured in the trailer, though it does indicate that the combat will be changed up quite a bit this time around. Square Enix noted that, this time around, Sora and company will cover the “Lost Master Arc.”
There’s no word just yet what other Disney characters will join the fray, though we do know that Goofy and Donald will be back, as they confront an unseen character at the end of the trailer.
In addition to Kingdom Hearts 4, Square Enix also revealed a new mobile game, Kingdom Hearts Missing Link, which will release later this year. It’ll likely offer a story tie-in with Kingdom Hearts 4, though the company didn’t indicate just how deep that would go.
During the announcement, series brand manager Ichiro Hazama noted, “We’d like to thank the fans for all of their support over the years, and we can’t wait for them to experience all that’s to come for Sora.” Nana Gadd, director for Walt Disney Games, also offered praise for the new projects. “We’ve been honored to work with Tetsuya Nomura and his team for two decades to introduce these original stories of discovery, courage, and friendship. This glimpse into Sora’s next adventure is just the beginning — we can’t wait to show more when the time is right.”
