Remember Sunset Overdrive? Many years ago, Microsoft paired up with Insomniac Games to deliver a crazy third-person action/adventure revolving around ridiculous weaponry and enemies made out of energy drink gunk. The game didn’t sell as well as Microsoft was hoping, but, over the years, it’s become a cult hit.
Now, with so many fans showing appreciation for the long-lost title (which they’re hoping will come to the PlayStation 5 one day, now that Insomniac has retained the rights to it), it appears that a staffer has indicated just how inspirational the sleeper hit has been to the company’s bigger PS4/PS5 hits.
Lindsay Thompson, a senior cinematic animator for the company, shared a fun little story after seeing some game footage from Justin’s Gaming Corner. They noted, ”I think a really cool thing to note is how all of our recent games have paved the way for the next one. This game (Sunset Overdrive) was a huge proving ground for all the work we ended up getting to do in Spider-Man, Miles and Rift Apart. It was super fun to make too!”
You can see some of the inspiration from the game that made its way into future releases, not to mention the 3D engine showing immense growth over the years. And, again, we think that possibly points the way for a PS5 port to come at some point.
Granted, Insomniac is rather busy enough as it is, not only making a sequel to its hit Spider-Man game, but also announcing it was tackling Marvel’s Wolverine for his own project as well. Both games are likely to arrive sometime in 2023.
