While the year is going to be a turbulent one in gaming thanks to COVID and the new Omicron variant, one thing is certain – you can’t stop a good street fight.
In this case, Capcom’s Street Fighter, which is set to celebrate its 35th anniversary this year. The series got its start way back in the 80s with the original Fighter, before expanding with its more popular sequels.
In a tweet over on social media, Capcom confirmed that a special celebration would take place this year, complete with a new logo.
HERE COMES A NEW ANNIVERSARY!
Cheers to 35 years of epic fights, fireballs and iconic rivalries!

However, in a somewhat more detailed post, the Japanese Street Fighter account confirmed that a “future development” was in place, hinting that we could finally see a new chapter in the Street Fighter saga. The tweet reads: “Street Fighter will celebrate its 35th anniversary in 2022. We have created a logo to celebrate the 35th anniversary with our supporters.
Please look forward to the future development of the Street Fighter series.”
Capcom stopped short of officially confirming the next game in the series, but it could be saving the announcement for the all-digital E3 that’s set to kick off this summer.
Or, perhaps, maybe something different. The Capcom Cup 2021 was set to take place this year, but, alas, due to COVID, it’s officially been cancelled as an in-person event. However, Capcom is planning an online tournament, with people competing against one another in virtual combat.
There’s a potential chance we could see the announcement for SF6 there.
Until then, hey, there’s always Street Fighter V, which has finally grown into the competitor we wanted it to be since its botched launch a few years ago. Better late than never, right?
