Even though Mario Kart 8 Deluxe continues to sell millions of copies on the Nintendo Switch, the big “N” apparently feels compelled to cover some new roads in the series.
An analyst with Kantan Games, Serkan Toto, recently reported that the ninth chapter in the ongoing versus kart-racing series is in “active development,” and is set to introduce a “new twist” that will take players by surprise. In fact, he also noted that we could see it unveiled as soon as this year.
The game follows Mario Kart 8, which initially released on Nintendo’s Wii U platform in 2014, before coming to the Switch three years later. Since that time, it’s become a massive seller. The series also debuted on mobile in 2019 with Mario Kart Tour, where it continues to attract a lot of fans. And 2020 brought a live-action version of the game, complete with remote model, for Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit.
Now the real question is what the “twist” will be. The series is no stranger to getting new components to change the racing game, like twin drivers for Mario Kart: Double Dash on the
GameCube, as well as the anti-gravity theme in Mario Kart 8. There could be portals, new drivers, heck, maybe even a “Marioverse” to contend with the next time around.
Nintendo already has some big plans for 2022, with a new Kirby game coming, along with Pokemon Arceus and other potential releases. But we’ll see where Mario Kart factors into its plans.
And, hey, Nintendo, a new F-Zero game wouldn’t hurt, y’know.
