Now that NetherRealm has “retired” Mortal Kombat 11 in terms of content and updates, that means the team is hard at work on the next game in the Injustice series, right? Not necessarily. In fact, we could see a return to Kombat much sooner than you think.
Industry member and journalist Jeff Grubb recently noted that, with WB Games currently in sales discussions, the studio might be jumping ahead into a new Kombat in an attempt to keep themselves relevant. That means the company’s rumored Marvel beat-em-up could be on hold as well, due to licensing.
“It lines up with the reality and it lines up with what I’ve heard, where Mortal Kombat 12 would make the most sense because that’s a game they know will make money, it will sell well,” he noted. “Mortal Kombat 11 was great, it’s doing well, but if you come out with Mortal Kombat 12 it will also sell and do well.” And the licensing thing? “You don’t have to use any of these Batman or Superman characters that might be tied up in licensing if you try to get rid of NetherRealm or sell it to whoever.” WB Games hasn’t made any note about NetherRealm or any other studios being sold at the moment. However, with the studio’s acquisition possibly coming by another company, the possibility is definitely there.
In the meantime, Mortal Kombat 11 Aftermath is currently available now for all platforms.
