There’s no stopping Grand Theft Auto V.
Eight years after its initial debut, Rockstar Games’ latest chapter in its ongoing series has become the best-selling game ever made. It cleared 100 million copies sold just a few months back, and now, during a 2K earnings call, the company revealed that it sold even more. A lot more.
A tweet from Daniel Ahmad revealed that the game has now shipped over 150 million copies, and has also reached $1 billion in retail sales faster than any other game on the market. That’s a lot of cheddar.
The franchise itself has done really well too, with all GTA games selling over 350 million copies thus far. Obviously GTA V plays a big part in that, but it just shows that Rockstar Games knows its audience with the subsequent releases.
The latest chapter has a very good chance of going even further, as it’s set to arrive on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S/X this November. With that, players should be flocking to see what next- gen features it’ll bring, possibly pushing the game into 200 million copies sold territory.
And that’s not the only game doing well for the company. It was revealed that Red Dead Redemption 2 is doing big numbers as well, selling over 38 million copies to date. That eclipses the original game by a mile, and shows that the game has a great deal of staying power between its large single player campaign and its ambitious multiplayer. And that likely won’t slow down anytime soon.
Congrats to Rockstar Games on the numbers. We’re curious to see how much further they grow. Imagine if they got a release on Nintendo Switch!
