PC Gaming, for the most part, has been the go-to platform for many gamers, but it’s usually stayed limited to home use, save for anyone that wanted to lug around a huge laptop. But that all changes this December, as Valve is set to get into the handheld gaming scene.
The company recently announced a new platform called the Steam Deck, which is set to arrive this December. It’s an all-in- one handheld capable of downloading games from the Steam library for handheld play, though there are various options available.
Featuring a 7-inch 1280 x 800 touchscreen LCD display with a 60hz refresh rate and up to 400 nits of brightness, the Steam Deck promises to show even the latest and greatest titles clearly. And here are the tech specs, letting you know just how well it runs:
- CPU: AMD Zen 2 with 4 cores, 8 threads (2.4 GHz to 3.5 GHz and up to 448 GFlops)
- GPU: 8 x AMD RDNA 2 compute units (1 – 1.6 GHz and up to 1.6 TFlops)
- Power consumption: 4 – 15 watts
And, yes, it comes with a 40 Wh battery, so you should have no problem enjoying your favorite game for a few hours and such. Want more specs? Here’s the full support for peripheral support for the system. You’ll be able to connect it to a TV, too.
- 1 x USB-A 3.1 Port
- 2 x USB-A 2.0 Ports
- External displays
- DisplayPort 1.4
- HDMI 2.0
The system will also feature a solid control set-up with two analog sticks, a touch pad, buttons and a D-pad, which is awkwardly set up at the top corner of the system. Ah, well, it still looks great. It will also run on Steam OS and will fully support players’ libraries once they sign in.
The system will start at $399 in price for the 64GB general model, with the ability to expand memory via memory card. However, die- hard players may want to take note of the $649 model, which features a 512GB Solid State Drive, as well as various accessories, including a carrying case.
Pre-orders for the Steam Deck go live at 1 PM EDT today on the official Steam page. Those that are interested will want to visit this link. We know we sure are.
