Poor, poor Visceral Games. Here was a studio that was clearly one of EA’s most talented, thanks to games like Dead Space and Battlefield: Hardline. Not to mention the fact that it was working on an original Star Wars game before the company decided to shutter the studio and try (and fail) to produce multiplayer fare instead.
But what’s interesting is that a piece of the company’s legacy could be coming back to life – and headed for next month’s EA Play event.
VentureBeat writer Jeffrey Grubb recently hosted his latest GamesBeat Decides podcast, and on it he made note that Electronic Arts would bring back one of its most popular fan Ips for the EA Play Live digital event when it premieres on July 22. But before you go speculating about the
return of such games as SSX and NBA Street, hold on tight – it’s actually Dead Space.
The story was picked up by VGC hours later, indicating that a “reimagining” of the original game is in the works, with Motive Studio, the creators of Star Wars: Squadrons, hard at work on the project. However, a conflicting report suggests an entirely new game, one that would do the legacy proud.
It’s been ages since we’ve seen Dead Space in action. The original game launched in October 2008 and has become a cult favorite, with the sequel selling just as well and a third game following in February 2013. Though the series hasn’t seen much action since, all three titles are playable on Xbox One/Xbox Series S/X through backward compatibility.
EA, of course, hasn’t confirmed any of these rumors; and likely won’t say anything until EA Play takes place. But if this is true, this will be the second consecutive year that the company brings back a franchise from dormancy. You may recall last year when the producers of the Skate series announced that a fourth chapter of the skateboarding saga is in the works, though it currently doesn’t have a release date.
We’ll see what happens next month. But if you’re in the mood for the creeps, watch the original Dead Space trailer below!
