The last time we saw Avatar in the video game world, it was with an ambitious third-person adventure from Ubisoft. And before that, we got, uh, some kind of speech from James Cameron that we’re still recovering from.
But it looks like the publisher has learned its lesson, as its newly announced entry in the Avatar universe got more to the point – it’s all about riding winged creatures and taking care of pesky humans.
The new project from The Division developers at Massive Entertainment, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora looks to be much more detailed than the original game, thanks to an incredible new engine and all sorts of blue people running around, taking on human soldiers. While it could tie in with the forthcoming James Cameron films, it has an original storyline, as follows:
“In this new, standalone story, play as a Na’vi and embark on a journey across the Western Frontier, a never-before-seen part of Pandora. Explore a living and reactive world inhabited by unique creatures and new characters, and push back the formidable RDA forces that threaten it.”
So far, the Snowdrop engine looks highly impressive, as you can see in the trailer below. But we’ll have to wait a bit longer for the game to arrive, as it’s due for release in 2022. Fans can expect to check it out on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S, Xbox Series X, PC and Stadia.
