At one point in time, the EVO Championship Series was the hottest ticket in town when it came to fighting action, with players from around the globe proving their mettle in a number of tournaments. But controversy surrounding one of the higher-ups within the company – along with COVID-19 – put EVO on the sidelines. Fret not, though, as it’s set to make a return.
Now, it’s not quite the tournament in Las Vegas just yet – COVID still lingers – but it’s the next best thing. Under Sony’s guidance (they acquired the tournament series earlier this year), three online community tournaments are coming, with the first debuting next week, featuring a number of fighting games for PlayStation 4. These include FGC Arcade: EVO Edition, along with the EVO 2021 Online Warm-Up and the Online Side Tournaments. Cash prizes will be offered, and anyone over the age of 18 with a PlayStation Plus membership can join in the fun!
The Arcade: EVO Edition kicks off first, running from the 10th through the 22nd of June, and will feature Granblue Fantasy: Versus, Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate, Tekken 7 and the soon-releasing Guilty Gear Strive. Newcomers and underdogs are welcome, as well as pros.
The Online Warm-Up continues the fun from June 26th through July 13th, with most of those same games and the addition of Street Fighter V: Champion Edition.
Last but not least, the Online Side Tournaments will be held from July 8th through August 3rd, and will feature many more fighting games: BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle, Dragon Ball
FighterZ, Granblue Fantasy: Versus, Mobile Suit Gundam: Extreme Vs. Maxi Boost ON, Skullgirls 2nd Encore, Soulcalibur VI, and Under Night In-Birth Exe:Late.
More details on the tournaments are available here on the PlayStation Blog, and, yes, you’ll be able to watch all the fighting action online in pure EVO style. We can’t wait to see how the fights go starting next week!
