The Borderlands movie from director Eli Roth continues to pick up steam. Following casting news from earlier this week surrounding Jamie Lee Curtis, another big name has joined in – Jack Black.
One half of the legendary Tenacious D and star of such films as Jumanji: The Next Level and High Fidelity, Black will be providing his voice to one of the most iconic characters in the series – Claptrap! It’s unknown how he’ll be animated in the film, but no doubt Black will give him all sorts of character, just as he did for Po in the Kung Fu Panda trilogy. Claptrap was initially voiced by David Eddings in the original Borderlands games, but a falling- out with Gearbox head Randy Pitchford led to him departing the role. Jim Foronda took over the role for Borderlands 3.
“It’s one of the biggest no-brainer casting decisions we’ve ever made,” said Lionsgate’s President Nathan Kahane on Black joining the project. “Everyone who’s ever played the game knows Jack is perfect for this part. We’re thrilled he will add his endless comic energy and voice to our film — he’ll bring so much to the movie.”
Roth also added his own thoughts on Black joining the cast. “I am so excited to reunite with Jack, this time in the recording booth. Claptrap is the funniest character in the game, and Jack is perfect to bring him to the big screen,” he said.
The film is set to begin production later this year. We’ll see what Black can do with the role…though David will always be Claptrap to us. Witness some of his best work below.
