Who knew that a sequel featuring three unique (and violent) characters would become the hottest selling game in history?
During a recent earnings call by Take-Two Interactive, it was revealed that the Rockstar Games hit Grand Theft Auto V has jumped tremendously in sales across 2020. Originally starting at 100 million copies sold at the beginning of the year, it’s now sold 140 million copies. That means over the past year alone, possibly due to the pandemic, people have bought the game for Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC.
Now, keep in mind that the package is more than GTA V. There’s also Grand Theft Auto Online, the component that allows players to compete against one another through weekly races, events, heists and a lot more. With this still ongoing across a number of platforms, it’s not likely that the game will slow down in sales anytime soon.
For that matter, once it debuts on PlayStation 5 this spring, we’ll likely see the number jump again, to at least 150 million or maybe even 160 million. Heck, if it manages to jump to Xbox Series X or (dare we dream) Nintendo Switch, that number could even reach 200 million. That’s practically a copy of Grand Theft Auto V for every home.
For that matter, Red Dead Redemption II has also done extremely well in its own right. The game has sold 36 million copies since its release, mainly due to the popularity of its single player campaign and its Red Dead Online hub, which Rockstar recently offered separately for $4.99 for those that don’t want to purchase the game. There’s no word if we’ll see an enhancement for it for new consoles down the road, but we don’t see why not.
But the interesting thing is that Rockstar could be working on remasters of older GTA games.
When asked about the possibility, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick was a bit vague.
“I’d say it’s a great and encouraging question,” he explained. “I’m kind of inclined to leave it more as a statement than a question. And any updates on our release schedule will come from Rockstar Games.”
There’s also no word on when GTA V would arrive on PS5 this year…but hopefully we won’t wait too long.
