Ever since the second iteration of the PlayStation and beyond, Sony Computer Entertainment has promised gamers that each version of the PlayStation would allow them to play previous titles, only to come up short on that promise. I have covered every single system launch of the PlayStation to date and that my friends is just a fact of the business. Now, Sony is hinting at backwards compatibility again, it might or might not happen. And if we could give Sony a bit of advice, continue making PlayStation 4 systems and peripherals to allow gamers to ease themselves into the PlayStation 5.
As a result of the Pandemic many gamers may not have the cash to pony up a $1000 for the system, extra controller and a few games. Gamers might have to stick with the PlayStation 4 until they get the cash to move up to the PS5 or the Xbox One Series X.
Sony’s Jim Ryan has been making the rounds talking about the PS5’s possible backwards compatibility, as did Jack Tretton, Andrew House and Kaz Hirai. The point is gamers are not going to buy the PS5 to play PS4 or PS3 games. They are going to buy the system to play the new titles that are being released for the system. So gamers need to get over even worrying about the backwards compatibility of the system and concentrate on what’s in front of them. Sony does have some fire power not only under the hood of the PlayStation 5, but they have some very smart folks helping to call the shots. Two of the big names include Mark Cerny formerly the master of Cerny Games who basically founded Naughty Dog, worked on Crash Bandicoot, and helped to propel Sony and the PlayStation to become the Kings of the gaming hill. Add to that one of the craftiest most intelligent people I have ever met in the form of the Stone Cold Steve Austin of the gaming world Christian Svensson.
He’s now the head of Global Portfolio and Acquisitions at PlayStation so you know the PS5 is going to have some kick-ass gaming content from other publishers. Svensson has gotten a little bit crotchety over the years but, needless to say, he will bring the “Smackdown” on the gaming world by scouring the world to make sure Sony has the best and the brightest gaming minds working on games for the PlayStation 5 and beyond!
